Preservation of Blackstone Hill Print

Preservation of Blackstone Hill – which has played a significant part in coal mining history. The discovery there of the Aberdare coal seam in 1886; Lewis Thomas developed from there a large number of mines and a thriving coal mining industry in the area.

Thomas built his three story castle “Brynhyfryd”, on top of this hill in the late 1880’s. This structure was demolished in the mid 1930’s. It was unsafe due to extensive underground mining.
