Abermain Junction, Tivoli Coke Ovens Project

We have partnered with Powerlink Queensland and the Rotary Club of Ipswich North to rejuvenate a local area that contains a set of bee hive coking ovens from the late 1800’s. The area has cultural significance and our project will safeguard this important piece of Queensland’s industrial heritage by restoring the ovens.

What has been done so far?

Powerlink has fenced off the significant area to protect the site. Some initial planning and approval work has also been completed.

Next steps?

The first phase of the restoration process will start in coming weeks. It will include the selective management of overgrown vegetation which has added to the disrepair of the coking ovens. Our careful restoration works will be guided by Historian Dr Thom Blake and Powerlink’s cultural heritage staff.

We hope to complete this project by late 2010. An opening ceremony will be held to celebrate this significant site. Watch this website for event details.
